Keeping Saxon Hall fit for purpose
Keeping a centre such as Saxon Hall fit for purpose is an ongoing challenge with some £60,000 set aside every year for maintenance and refurbishment. In simple terms that represents around £30 a head for every mason that uses the building.
There is a currently an ongoing programme of improvements which includes redecorating, the installation of low level lighting for intimate events such as ladies nights, repairs to furniture and to the toilets by the main entrance and more.
Nearly every day there is something to do in a building the size of Saxon Hall to ensure that the Centre remains in first class condition at all times.
Board director David Spring, whose committee is responsible for maintenance and refurbishment, commented: "Repairs are amongst our largest overheads after staff costs and we have a responsibility to ensure that we spend money wisely. We obviously have to pass on these costs to the brethren which they see as per capita charges so it is important that they are aware of where their money goes."
All of us can help to keep costs down. Repairs to furniture for example, particularly tables, are proving to be an increasing expense following the enthusiastic use of gavels and firing glasses at Festive Boards - so please be gentle brethren - if possible.

Festival 2011 – The Last Lap
Southend has responded magnificently to the Festival 2011 Appeal with literally dozens of Lodges and Chapters meeting at Saxon Hall achieving Grand Patron and, in some cases, Double Grand Patron status.
But with just 18 months to go the Provincial Grand Charity Steward Laurie Justice is asking all Lodges if they can go that extra mile and, as part of this initiative, has given special dispensation for any order willing to sell scratch cards.
From the start of the year Lodges and Chapters willing to offer scratch cards will be credited with 50% of sales towards their 2011 honorifics. Cards can be obtained from Colin Felton, e-mail colin@cfa-group.com
All cash from scratch cards will still have to be credited initially to the Essex Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge before being reaccredited to the individual orders but please speak to Colin for details.
